A civilian employee of the NYPD was arrested and charged in Lower Manhattan on Tuesday for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend multiple times last month, sources familiar with the incident said.
According to police sources, 29-year-old NYPD research specialist Drew Winkler was cuffed on Sept. 3 at 7:38 a.m. in the confines of the 1st Precinct on assault and strangulation charges.
While cops did not specify particulars, sources with immediate knowledge of the investigation reported that Winkler allegedly attacked his 25-year-old girlfriend on multiple occasions throughout the month of August at their Lower Manhattan apartment.
The sources reported that Winkler first allegedly pushed his partner’s face on Aug. 4 before punching her in the jaw. The next complaint came on Aug. 24 when he reportedly choked the woman with both hands. While she did not lose consciousness, she told police she suffered great pain.
The final incident allegedly occurred on Aug. 31, when Winkler stands accused of pushing the victim into a stove handle that caused a laceration across her back before slamming a door on her leg.
Police said that Winkler serves as a civilian employee at the NYPD Intelligence Bureau’s Intelligence Research Specialists — which involves working in a broad array of fields with diverse economic backgrounds including international relations, global affairs, cybersecurity, political science, security studies, law, and public policy.
Winkler is charged with second- and third-degree assault, and second-degree strangulation. The NYPD did not specify the nature of internal disciplinary action against him.
