Detectives are investigating the death of a man found murdered in Chinatown early Sunday morning, police said.
According to police sources, the NYPD is working to identify a man who was found dead on Bayard Street just outside of Columbus Park. The individual was discovered with a slash wound to the neck at around 3:30 a.m., but he wasn’t carrying any form of identification. He was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
A blood-spattered bag and small luggage carrier could be observed at the scene.
Police sources said that a 49-year-old man was taken into custody as a person of interest, but he has yet to be charged. The street and a large section of the park remained cordoned-off to the public as of Sunday morning.
With a large homeless population in the area, several unhoused individuals told amNewYork Metro that they feared the victim could have been a friend.
The investigation remains ongoing.
