Firefighters battled a first-floor blaze in Gramercy on Thursday evening, resulting in one person being rushed to the hospital.
First responders flooded West 32nd Street and 5th Avenue after receiving a report of smoke wafting from the 1stfloor of restaurant Kushi Kushi Yaki on 2 West 32nd Street.
Hordes of onlookers gathered to watch the drama unfold at the five-story building as members of the FDNY began dragging hoses into the building’s cellar at 8:20 p.m., while several officials performed a search of the premises.
Bathed in the red hue of their emergency lights, personnel swiftly tended to an individual who had sustained injuries during the incident, rushing them to Bellevue Hospital, FDNY sources said.
With the FDNY tackling the fire from above and below, it was placed under control by 8:48 pm, during which time firefighters remained at the scene investigating neighboring buildings to ensure it did not spread.
