Chinatown residents celebrated the Lunar New Year over Tuesday into Wednesday morning with a joyously chaotic celebration known as Midnight Madness.

Marking the Year of the Snake, a troop of lion dancers emerged from the Athletic Club at 211 Canal St. just after 11 p.m. as throngs of spectators assembled to catch a glimpse of the colorful, majestic performance.

Spectators unleashed confetti over the lions as they marched through the historic neighborhood.

The lion parade meandered to the Chinese Freemasons Association at 22 Mott St., where, leading up to midnight, they continued to perform.

Thundering firecrackers lit up the night, shooting sparks in all directions and spewing smoke, much to the delight of onlookers.
