Police arrested Hakeem Smith, 24, on Fri., Oct. 28, in connection with the Oct.16 shooting death of Donovan Salgado, 17, on E. 12th St. and Avenue C. Smith, who has had prior arrests for weapons possession, shot Salgado during an armed holdup on the street at 1:50 a.m., according to police. He is being held on charges of murder, robbery and possession of a weapon.
Parking-punch trial
Oscar Fuller, 31, went on trial Tues., Nov. 1, for the Feb. 25 assault on a woman who was trying to save a curbside parking space for a friend on E. 14th St. between Avenues A and B. Fuller flew into a rage at the victim, Lana Rosas, around 1:40 p.m. because she blocked his car at the site and he punched her, according to the charges. She fell, struck her head on the pavement and Fuller drove off. But he was arrested at his home later. Fuller claimed he “just tapped” the 4-foot-11-inch-tall victim after she punched him first. The victim was taken to the hospital in a coma, which lasted a week.
Halloween arrests Police arrested 14 people on Oct. 31 on the Halloween Parade route along Sixth Ave. in the Village. Three people were arrested for assault, one was stopped for weapons possession and the others included six disorderly-conduct arrests and one for criminal mischief. Police also issued 199 summonses, of which 150 were for drinking alcohol from open containers on the street and 10 were for public urination.
Serial store robber Police arrested Jed Cappelli, 33, shortly after 1:10 a.m. Mon., Oct. 24, for a series of armed holdups in the West Village and East Village.
Cappelli was arrested shortly after holding up a bodega at 36 Avenue A at E. Third St. at gunpoint and fleeing with an undisclosed sum, police said. He was also charged with the Thurs., Oct. 20, robbery of Le Basket, 683 Broadway at W. Third St., at 4:25 p.m. while armed with a handgun. He fled from that scene with $2,750, according to the complaint filed with the Manhattan district attorney. Cappelli is also charged with robbing Cho’s Grocery store, at 37 Bedford St. near Carmine St., at 4:58 a.m. Oct. 13 and making off with about $800. On Oct. 3 at about 1:15 a.m. he took $200 from Charles Gourmet, 140 Charles St., at gunpoint, according to the complaint.
Just before he was arrested on Oct. 24, Cappelli dropped the stolen money on the ground, police said. The suspect had a .45-caliber Glock handgun when he was arrested, police said.
Greenwich Ave. burglary Sixth Precinct police responded to a burglary in progress report around 6 a.m. Thurs., Oct. 27, and arrested a suspect standing next to a shattered glass panel at 28 Greenwich Ave. with a power drill at his feet and a screwdriver in his hands. Carlos Velez Jr., 39, was charged with burglary, possession of stolen property and possession of burglary tools. The power drill had been stolen from the building, police said.
Games and funny money Police arrested four suspects on Wednesday evening Oct. 26 for buying electronic games at GameStop, 687 Broadway, and at another store with fake gift cards and credit cards. Police recovered two games and four counterfeit $50 bills from Adam Recio, 26, Hugo Fernandez, 26, Kahlil Ramsey, 17, and George Drayton, 30. The U.S. Secret Service is prosecuting them for possession of counterfeit currency.
Punched and kicked A Manhattan man, 52, told police that a woman punched him and kicked him around 1:10 a.m. Tues., Nov. 1, at the corner of Seventh and Greenwich Aves. Irene Hector, 21, was charged with third-degree assault. An Emergency Medical Service team treated the victim for a cut lip and cuts to his forehead at the scene.
Unwanted donation A Queens man, 18, refused to give a panhandler any money at the Christopher St. subway station on Tuesday night Nov. 1 but offered to buy him a MetroCard. But when the victim went to a MetroCard vending machine, the suspect snatched his gold neck chain and fled. Police soon arrested Victor Anderson, 58, and charged him with larceny. Anderson had an outstanding warrant for a prior offense, police said.
Chinatown bank attempt A man wearing a Chicago White Sox baseball cap, a gray jacket and sunglasses, walked up to a teller in the Chase bank branch on Grand St. near Bowery around 8:20 a.m. Fri., Oct. 28, and demanded money, according to reports. He fled without taking anything after the teller hit the silent alarm.
Tattoo parlor punch A man who walked into Village Diva, a smoke shop and tattoo parlor at 117 Christopher St., at 11:25 p.m. on Halloween was asked to leave after he became rowdy. When an employee tried to escort him out of the shop, the suspect punched him in the head. Police charged Zachary Almanzar, 17, with assault.
Vespa vanished A man who parked his 2009 black Vespa on Wooster St. at Broome St. near his home around 9 p.m. Fri., Oct. 21, and went on vacation the following morning, returned 10 days later to discover it had been stolen.
Union Sq. subway groper A 19-year-old woman was waiting for a Downtown No. 6 train at the Union Square subway station around 9:30 a.m. Oct. 23 when a young, heavyset man lifted her dress and grabbed her crotch, according to reports. The victim slapped her attacker and snapped his photo through the window after he got on a train.
