Stabbed at South Ferry
A man who was found in the South Ferry terminal with his back slashed around 12:50p.m. on Fri., March 16 told police that he had been attacked in the subway. The victim was taken to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition.
Grieving suicide
A man dressed for his wife’s funeral jumped to his death from his 12th floor apartment in the Masaryk Towers on the Lower East Side on Fri., March 23, police said.
Miguel Melendez, 78, was pronounced dead at 9:25 a.m. in the rear lawn area of 77 Columbia St., police said. His wife, Dominga, 76, had died Mon., March 19 after a long illness and her funeral was scheduled for 3 p.m. Fri., according to reports. The couple’s son, Michael, was sobbing at the scene a short time later. The couple’s daughter died of AIDS several years ago, according to a New York Post item.
Blind date theft
A woman, 50, told police that a man with whom she had a blind date at Lucky Jack’s, 129 Orchard St., on March 9 stole her wallet and iPhone. The victim said they had been emailing each other on the website Plenty of Fish before they met at the Lower East Side bar. She didn’t discover the missing wallet and phone until after she driven her date, whom she knew only as Hayden, to the Second Ave, subway station on Houston St. and dropped him off. He was described as being between 25 and 30 years old, 6’1”, thin build.
Out the window
A resident of a fourth floor apartment in the Seward Park Co-op is suing the co-op and a 12th floor resident charging the upstairs neighbor had been tossing urine from his window. Gary Strum, the fourth floor resident at 212 E. Broadway, filed the action in State Supreme Court saying he endured the periodic stench for years without realizing where it came from. But in October 2009 he removed a window air conditioner and realized what was up. Strum used surveillance equipment to record that the urine was from a window eight floors above his, according to a New York Post item. He surmised that Raymond Spielberg, the elderly 12th floor resident, tossed the urine when his health aide was not in attendance. Spielberg told the Post, that he didn’t know anything about it.
Strum is asking for $250,000 from Spielberg, the co-op and the management company, Charles Greenthal.
Larceny list
A woman visiting from Washington state put her wallet down on a counter in the Whole Foods sore at 270 Greenwich St. near Murray St. around 1:15 p.m. Wed, March 21and discovered a short time later that it had been stolen.
A woman patron of Fresca, the restaurant at 114 Pearl St., draped her bag on the back of her chair around 12:30 p.m. Mon., March 19 and was notified after lunch two hours later by American Express about a $1,500 credit card charge. She discovered that her wallet with $250 cash, other credit cards and driver’s license had been stolen.
A Florida woman was having a drink at Bread Tribeca, 279 Church Set. at 5:50 p.m. Wed., March 21, and discovered 20 minutes later that her bag, which she had put on the bar beside her, had been stolen.
A visitor from Arizona, 22, was dancing at Ulysses, the club at 95 Pearl St. around 3:35 a.m. Sat. March 25 when a man grabbed the bag from her shoulder with her wallet, $200 in cash, her cell phone and charger, and fled with it down Stone St.
A man, 46, sat at a table at Starbucks at the corner of Dey and Church Sts. around 4:15 p.m. Thurs., March 22 and put his bag at his feet while having coffee. He discovered 20 minutes later that the bag was gone.
Keep an eye on the card
A woman visiting from Kentucky was watching a three-card monte game on Canal St. between Mercer and Greene Sts. around 12:25 p.m. Sat., March 24 when a bystander dipped into her shoulder bag. She protested but the thief said, “Go ahead call the law,” and fled east on Canal St. with her wallet.
Fake credit card
A security at the Duane Reade at 40 Wall St. held a man who used a fake credit card when he tried to buy five American Express gift cards with a total valued of $1,040 along with a box of pencils and a package of fabric softener.
Stolen at work
A woman employee of Blaue Gans restaurant, 139 Duane St., checked her bag when she came to work at 3:20 p.m. Thurs. March 22 and discovered two hours later that it had been stolen. A man was caught on surveillance tape fleeing with the bag.
Vehicle theft
A Queens man who parked his motorcycle a the corner of Murray and North End Ave. in Battery Park City at 4p.m. Mon. March 19 returned at 9:30 p.m. to discover that it had been stolen.
A Long Island woman, 39, parked her car at Vestry and Hudson Sts. at 12:30 a.m. Sat., March 24 and returned four hours later to find the rear window smashed and the GPS gone along with two hand bags and an iPod.
A Scarsdale man, 59, parked his 2009 white Toyota Camry on the northeast corner of Greenwich and Harrison Sts. at 2 p.m. Sat., March 24 and returned at 8 p.m. to find it was gone.
