Police in Queens are continuing to investigate a double stabbing on New Year’s Day that left a man dead and a second fighting for his life in what is believed to be the first New York City homicide of 2024.
Law enforcement sources said the murder happened at about 3:57 a.m. on Jan. 1 near the corner of 76th Street and Roosevelt Avenue in Jackson Heights.
Upon arrival, officers from the 110th Precinct found 29-year-old Tsering Wangdu with a stab wound to the leg and a second unnamed 30-year-old man with stab wounds to the chest and face.
Both victims were rushed to Elmhurst Hospital, where Wangdu was pronounced dead, and the 30-year-old is still fighting for his life.
Police say detectives are still investigating whether the brutal slaying stemmed from a lone suspect or if multiple perpetrators were involved.
No arrests have been made and the investigation remains ongoing.
As 2023 came to a close Sunday, the NYPD was on track for fewer than 400 homicides for the entire year. As of Dec. 24, 2023, the department tallied 380 murders, down 11.4% from the year-to-date number in 2022.
The 110th Precinct saw three homicides in 2023, down from the eight recorded in 2022, the most recent CompStat report indicated.
