Sen. Charles Schumer Sunday said chickens raised in China are closer to coming to Americans’ dinner plates.
Schumer said a U.S. Department of Agriculture report to Congress indicates that its Food Safety and Inspection Service found some Chinese chicken slaughtering standards "equivalent" to America’s safeguards.
This could threaten the "safe food supply," Schumer said in a statement.
USDA spokesman Aaron Lavallee denied that the USDA found China’s poultry slaughter system equivalent to the U.S.’s.
