With the search for Avonte Oquendo in its fourth week, Sen. Charles Schumer yesterday called on the U.S. Department of Justice to fund a program to track children with autism or other developmental disorders.
Under the initiative, money would provide tracking devices to parents or caregivers who volunteer to participate, as well as training on usage and maintenance. Local law enforcement would run the program, according to Schumer.
The program would be an expansion of one that tracks seniors with Alzheimer’s disease.
Oquendo, the missing autistic 14-year-old, was last seen Oct. 4 in Long Island City.
