A senior was stabbed inside a Midtown train station by a panhandler on Sunday night, leaving him in critical condition, police and sources said.
The victim, a 76-year-old man, was stabbed in the torso on the mezzanine level of the 34th Street Herald Square subway station at around 11:30 p.m., police said. The elderly man was rushed to Bellevue Hospital where he was initially reported to be in critical condition before being downgraded to stable.
Sources familiar with the investigation told amNewYork Metro that that the suspect was begging for money and became enraged when the senior refused to give him change. The suspect then stabbed the 76-year-old with a sharp object before fleeing the scene on foot. It is currently unclear exactly what the man used to injure the senior since police have reportedly not recovered the weapon.
No arrests have been made and the investigation remains ongoing.
