A Manhattan woman admitted to shoving another woman into an oncoming train in Times Square, prosecutors announced Thursday.
On Aug. 8, Anthonia Egegbara, 32, pleaded guilty to assault for pushing the 42-year-old victim onto the tracks in an unprovoked attack back in October 2021.
According to court documents, on Oct. 4, 2021, the victim was waiting on the northbound 1/2/3 train platform at the Times Square – 42nd Street subway station at 8:06 a.m. As the train pulled into the station, Egegbara, who was sitting on a nearby bench, stood up, walked over to the victim and pushed her into the train. Egegbara then fled the station.
Witnesses on the platform called 911 and the victim was taken to a nearby hospital, where she stayed for several days. She sustained a broken arm, which required surgery to help heal, as well as bleeding from the leg and bleeding and bruising to the face. The victim has since received continuing medical treatment to address lingering injuries affecting her ability to lift and grip objects.
Egegbara was taken into custody the following day.
“Today Anthonia Egegbara was held accountable for pushing a stranger into an oncoming train during morning rush hour in a completely unprovoked attack,” said District Attorney Bragg. “Due to this brutal conduct, the victim suffered serious physical injuries, which were thankfully non-fatal. Our transit system should be a safe environment for all Manhattanites, and we will continue prosecuting those who jeopardize the safety of its commuters, riders and workers.”
Egegbara is expected to return to court on Sept. 19, when she will be sentenced to 12 years in state prison, followed by 5 years of post-release supervision.
