A suspect is dead after a police-involved shooting at a Home Depot on Staten Island early Thursday morning, authorities said.
According to law enforcement officials, the incident occurred at around 5:19 a.m. in the Bricktown Commons shopping plaza, located at 2750 Veterans Rd. W. in the normally quiet neighborhood of Charleston.
Officers from the 123rd Precinct responded to a 911 call of a man with a gun who was sitting in a black Jeep Wrangler near the Home Depot. Officers immediately responded and arrived in both marked and unmarked vehicles, Assistant Chief Melissa Eger, Staten Island’s borough commanding officer, explained.
According to the Staten Island Advance, the NYPD’s Force Investigation Division, the Emergency Service Unit (ESU) and Highway Patrol also responded to the scene.
Just as police approached the scene, they heard multiple shots being fired.
The suspect, a 55-year-old man, allegedly brandished the gun when the officers surrounded him and repeatedly told him to drop the weapon.
“The officers tactically positioned themselves around their police vehicles and immediately verbally engaged with the male,” Eger said. “Multiple officers repeatedly instructed him to drop his hands and drop his firearm, which is all confirmed on body-worn camera footage.”
The suspect did not comply and then pointed his weapon at the officers. Five officers shot at the suspect, shooting him numerous times, Eger explained.
A Smith and Wesson .38 caliber revolver, shell casings, and live ammunition were recovered at the scene.
The officers performed CPR on the suspect. He was rushed to Staten Island University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
“Our officers ran toward gunfire and bravely confronted danger,” Eger said.
No officers were injured in the incident. It is unclear right now what may have led to the shooting.
The NYPD’s Force Investigation Division is investigating the incident.
The 123rd Precinct saw zero murders this year through March 2, compared to one during the same time period in 2024, according to the latest crime statisics. Overall, major crime is also down just over 13% during the same time period, the data shows.
