Violence struck Times Square again on Thursday evening after an apparent dispute ended with a teen getting stabbed, police and eyewitnesses said.
Police sources confirmed that they have taken a person of interest into custody and are still seeking others who may have been involved in the attack.
According to police sources, officers from the Midtown South Precinct rushed to the Regal movie theater located on 42nd Street and 8th Avenue after reports that a person had been stabbed at around 5:33 p.m. on Feb. 22.
Arriving officers discovered a 17-year-old-boy who had suffered a stab wound to the back. EMS rushed him to Bellevue Hospital, where he is expected to survive.
Preliminary information from witnesses and law-enforcement sources indicate that the incident began as a brawl between 10-15 people and lead to a chase that resulted in the youth being stabbed.
Belal Mohamed, a food cart vendor working on 8th Avenue, said he saw police tackle a knife-wielding suspect.
“I saw someone running and there were cops following him,” Mohamed said. “The cops jumped and caught him and arrested him. I saw the knife, it was a big knife.”
Mohamed shared that he saw the victim struggle with blood pouring from his back.
The investigation remains ongoing, police said.
Thursday’s stabbing occurred two weeks after a woman was shot during an apparent robbery attempt at a Times Square sporting goods store. The shooter in the case — who, police said, shot at officers while fleeing — was apprehended the following day.
