New York will get a New Year’s Twerkin’ Eve in Times Square.
Before the ball drops, “Wrecking Ball” singer Miley Cyrus will perform on ABC’s “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest” along with Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, Blondie and Icona Pop.
“You’ve got a sampling of everything that’s happened culturally over the last year,” said Times Square Alliance president Tim Tompkins.
More than a million people are expected to squeeze into Times Square to ring in 2014. The weather calls for chilling temperatures as low as 22 degrees, with a high of 30 degrees on Tuesday.
For revelers who want to avoid frigid temperatures, there will be a live webcast available at Times SquareNYC.org, livestream.com and TimesSquareBall.net.
Melissa Etheridge, who will perform her new song “Uprising of Love,” will play out 2013 with a rendition of John Lennon’s “Imagine.” The Times Square New Year’s Eve celebration hosted by Allison Hagendorf kicks off at 6 p.m. with a lively Chinese cultural performance presented by the Sino-American Friendship Association.
Musical events also include a USO Show Troupe, country singer Rodney Atkins on Fox News Channel’s “All American New Year,” and singers Jencarlos Canela and El Dasa on Univision’s “¡Feliz 2014!”
During 2013’s final hour, The Associated Press will recount in a news reel the year’s most important and memorable events.
“It’s about tapping into where we’ve been, where we’ve gone and where we’re going and to celebrate the good things in life, no matter how crazy the world is,” Tompkins said of the Times Square celebration.
In a poll the AP conducted with the Times Square Alliance, nearly half of Americans anticipate that 2014 will be better than this year, though more than a third of people did not expect much of a difference.
“This is a time when people take a pause and look forward with a sense of hope even if they’ve had a tough year,” Tompkins said.
