Sunday Parking Rules in effect MONDAY Memorial Day

Memorial Day weekend is upon us! This means Lower Manhattan will see monster traffic jams at area bridges and tunnels on Thursday and Friday. Hardest hit will be the Holland Tunnel approaches from Canal, Varick, and Broome Sts. The Broome St. back-up, around 4 p.m. both days, may extend all the way to Lafayette St. The best time to travel will be after 9 p.m. Friday.

Follow me on Twitter @gridlocksam for Memorial Day weekend travel tips.

Beginning Wednesday and Thursday, the city D.O.T. will install a new pedestrian plaza on Washington St. between Albany and Carlisle Sts. The plaza will permanently close the roadway.

The Waverly Place Festival will close Washington Square North between University Pl. and Sixth Ave. 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.

A Weekend Walks event in Chinatown will close Mott St. between Canal St. and Chatham Square 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

A community fair will close Liberty St. between Broadway and Trinity Pl. 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday.

Rector St. will close between West and Greenwich Sts. 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. weeknights through late June.

St. Johns Lane between Laight and Beach Sts. and York St. between St. Johns Lane and Sixth Ave. will fully close7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Friday.

All lanes of the inbound Lincoln Tunnel helix (the spiral approach road to the tunnel) will close 10:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday nights. This means Manhattan-bound traffic will be detoured to the Holland Tunnel and onto Canal St.

From the mailbag:

Dear Transit Sam,

I have family members coming to town for a wedding.  They will be traveling between New Jersey and New York a few times during their stay. Do you know if E-ZPass is sold for a certain number of trips like MetroCards? If so, can you tell me how to go about getting one?

Phyllis, New York

Dear Phyllis,

Yes, although it doesn’t work exactly like a MetroCard. With the “pay per trip” E-ZPass plan, instead of buying trips in advance, you link your E-ZPass account to your bank account. The cost of the trips is deducted from the account once per day on the days of toll usage. The account can be set up online (https://www.e-zpassny.com/en/signup/step1.shtml) and the tag can be picked up at any number of retailers: https://www.e-zpassny.com/en/onthego/locations.shtml#nyc.
