A 12-inch water main on W. Third St. in the Village broke on Tuesday evening Aug. 9 while a Department of Environmental Protection crew was working on it. The break flooded the excavation and left buildings between Thompson St. and La Guardia Place without water until about 10:45 p.m. when the break was repaired. The D.E.P. crew had been installing a valve to the 140-year-old main for a new connection to a building on the block, a D.E.P. spokesperson said.
