A senior in the West Village died after a fire ripped through her apartment building on Wednesday morning, it was reported.
Firefighters rushed to 142 Waverly Place, between 6th Avenue and Grove Street, at 7:20 a.m. on March 5 after smoke started pouring out of a 5-story building.
“I didn’t see any flames, I just saw smoke,” a neighbor walking her dog told amNewYork Metro. “I watched them [firefighters] break the windows out.
Firefighters pulled an 81-year-old woman from the building and attempted to revive her on the street, but she could not be saved and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The victim’s daughter fell into the arms of firefighters, weeping profusely.
According to FDNY sources, about 12 units and 60 fire and EMS personnel responded to the scene. The fire was placed under control just after 8:30 a.m.
Sources familiar with the investigation report that the blaze may have stemmed from an electrical issue. However, Fire Marshals have yet to officially determine the cause.
