A woman who told police she was slashed in the Financial District on Thursday has recanted her story, police said Friday.
Initially, the 20-year-old woman claimed she was walking up Broadway, near Rector Street, when a man attacked at about 4:50 p.m., slashing her in the left cheek and possibly yelling “terrorist,” a law enforcement official said on Thursday.
But police said the woman later recanted the story. Investigators said they believe the wound to her cheek was self-inflicted.
The woman was taken to Bellevue Hospital Center with nonlife-threatening injuries and is undergoing a psychiatric evaluation, police said.
Authorities said the investigation is ongoing. It remains unclear whether the woman will face any charges.
