Volume 81, Number 20 | October 20 – 26, 2011
West and East Village, Chelsea, Soho, Noho, Little Italy, Chinatown and Lower East Side, Since 1933 A young boy was pulled out alive from the rubble on the third day after the January 2010 earthquake near the cathedral in Port-au-Prince’s Bel Aire district. He was taken to a makeshift triage center and treated by Cuban doctors. Haiti Cultural Exchange is hosting a free evening of Haitian culture at Soho Photo, 15 White St., in Tribeca, on Fri., Oct. 21. The event is in conjunction with Tequila Minsky’s exhibit of her award-winning photos of the Haitian earthquake, “Haiti = Survival (No question, but),” at Soho Photo.
Soho Photo and Minsky have partnered for the Haitian cultural evening, which will include an artist talk with Minsky, as well as a spoken-word performance by Ibi Zoboi, and live Haitian jazz with saxophonist Buyu Ambroise and his band — plus Prestige beer, Haiti’s favorite. Everything is free. Minsky is Soho Photo’s October exhibitor. She has traveled to Haiti more than 20 times since 1993 in connection with various photojournalistic projects.
Minsky arrived in Port-au-Prince five hours before the earthquake struck on Jan. 12, 2010, having spent almost a week in the Haitian countryside with a delegation visiting the peasant farmer association M.P.P. Three hours after the earthquake, Minsky’s photos were published on The New York Times blog and in the Times’s morning edition. Her exhibition at Soho Photo includes images of the disaster as it was unfolding and the immediate and slightly longer aftermath. The exhibit is supported, in part, by Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and continues until Sat., Oct. 29.
The cultural evening is sponsored, in part, by Prestige beer and Soho/Tribeca restaurants Bubby’s, Boom, Krik Krak and Le Pescadeux.
There is no charge. Donations will be accepted for two organizations working in Haiti — MUDHA, working in Leogane with women, and Three Little Flowers School in Fort Royal, which was damaged by the earthquake. Soho Photo, at 15 White St., is located three blocks below Canal St. between Sixth Ave. and West Broadway. The cultural evening will run from 6:30 p.m. on.
