New Year’s Eve, Day transit: NYC subway, bus and rail information

Every New Year’s Eve an estimated 1 million people flood Times Square for the ball drop and thousands more head to parties, bars and concerts throughout the city.

While the excitement coursing through the streets can be fun, it also means more people relying on public transportation to get around.

Here is everything you need to know to get in and out of New York City for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Subways

Monday:

Lines that cross through midtown will operate every 8-12 minutes until 3 a.m. to accommodate New Year’s Eve revelers.

Entrances/exits at the Times Square station, serving the 1, 2, 3, 7, N, Q, R, W and S lines, are subject to closure. People trying to get to Times Square for the ball drop should exit via the Eighth Avenue-42nd Street passageway.

Uptown 1 trains will skip 50th Street (noon to midnight).

N, Q, R and W trains will skip 49th Street in both directions (noon to midnight).

Trains will otherwise operate on a regular weekday schedule.

Tuesday:

Trains will run on a Sunday schedule.

5 trains will run between Bowling Green and Dyre Avenue.

5 trains will run local in the Bronx.

No express 6 and 7 trains.

No B trains.

D trains will run local in the Bronx.

M trains will run between Metropolitan Avenue and Delancey-Essex Street.

N trains will run local in Manhattan.

No W trains.

No Z trains.

Buses

Monday: The following buses will take you to Times Square. However, the MTA warns of possible rerouting on New Year’s Eve due to street closures or heavy congestion: M1, M2, M3, M4, M5, M7, M10, M11, M12, M20, M31, M34 SBS, M34A SBS, M42, M50, M55, M57, M101, M102, M103, M104, BxM2, QM1, QM2, QM3, QM4, QM5, QM6, QM10, QM12, QM15, QM16, QM17, QM18, QM20, QM24, SIM1c, SIM3c, SIM4c, SIM3, SIM8/8x, SIM10, SIM22, SIM23, SIM24, SIM25, SIM26, SIM30, SIM31, Q32.

All local, express, limited-stop, and Select Bus Service will run with minor adjustments in departure times. Check mta.info for your specific route.

Tuesday: Buses will run on a Sunday schedule. Check mta.info for your specific route.

Long Island Rail Road

Monday: There will be 13 extra afternoon trains from Penn Station and 21 extra evening trains to Penn Station. Check mta.info/lirr for the full schedule.

Tuesday: 15 extra eastbound trains will leave Penn Station and 4 extra trains will leave Atlantic Terminal in the afternoon. Check mta.info/lirr for the full schedule.

Note: Drinking alcohol on LIRR trains and platforms is banned from noon on New Year’s Eve until noon on New Year’s Day.

Metro-North Railroad

Monday: There will be extra inbound late afternoon and early evening service. Check mta.info/mnr for the full schedule.

Tuesday: Extra trains will leave Grand Central between 12:30 and 5:30 a.m. (tickets during this time will be collected before boarding). Afterward, trains will operate on a weekend service schedule. Check mta.info/mnr for the full schedule.

Note: Drinking alcohol on Metro-North trains and platforms is banned from noon on New Year’s Eve until noon on New Year’s Day.

NJ Transit

Monday: Trains will operate on a modified weekday schedule until 6 p.m., but there won’t be any getaway service. In the evening, extra North Jersey Coast and Morris & Essex Lines trains will operate to New York. Check njtransit.com for the full schedule.

Tuesday: After midnight, additional late-night trains will operate on all lines until approximately 5 a.m. After 5 a.m., trains will operate on a weekend/major holiday schedule. Check njtransit.com for the full schedule.
