Self-taught ‘Outsider’ artists envision New York City transit

A new exhibit at the New York Transit Museum features artists that are often described as “outsiders.”

They are self-taught members of Pure Vision Arts, a nonprofit arts studio in Chelsea whose mission is to support people with autism and other developmental disabilities with space, materials and community. The studio is an initiative of a larger social welfare organization, The Shield Institute.

Pam Rogers, the director of Pure Vision Arts, said exhibitions like “Transit on the Spectrum” serve to reduce negative stereotypes and misperceptions about the members of the studio. “It’s helping to feature their work as genuine cultural contributors,” she said.

The exhibit runs through September 2014. A children’s arts workshop related to the exhibit will be held Saturday and Sunday.
