A child was shot on a Manhattan street in broad daylight on Monday afternoon, police reported.
Law enforcement sources said the incident happened at about 3 p.m. on Nov. 11 near the corner of West 145th Street and Bradhurst Avenue in Harlem, within the confines of the 30th Precinct.
While the exact circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear, initial reports indicated that two men were engaged in a firefight at the location when the victim, a girl believed to be 7 years of age, was struck by gunfire.
The youngster was walking with family members when she was shot in the abdomen, police reported.
Responding officers bundled her into a police vehicle and rushed her to a local hospital; luckily, she is listed in stable condition at this time.
“She’s currently in surgery, does not appear to be life-threatening at this time; the commissioner and I both want to really commend the men and women of the Police Department,” said Mayor Eric Adams, who visited the crime scene Monday evening. “She left the scene via [police cruiser].”
Adams went on to extend appreciation for “the quick and responsive action of the police officers to apprehend who we believe [to be the] individuals involved” in the shooting.
Two suspects reportedly fled the scene, but were quickly apprehended by police and are being questioned, law enforcement sources said. Charges are pending the results of the ongoing investigation.
Police also recovered a gun used in the shooting.
The 30th Precinct has seen five shootings year-to-date through Nov. 3, according to the most recent CompStat report.
