A woman is dead after being struck by a box truck while riding her bike in Gowanus early Tuesday morning.
The incident took place near 2nd Avenue and 9th Street at around 7:20 am on Jan. 10. Police say a 37-year-old woman was riding a Citi Bike in the vicinity when she was struck by the box truck driver, though the circumstances of the crash were unclear pending investigation.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, and remains unidentified pending family notification. The box truck driver remained on scene, though no arrests have been made and cops don’t suspect criminality.
The intersection of 2nd and 9th has seen 16 people injured in nine crashes over the past decade, according to NYC Crash Mapper; four of those involved cyclists.
Seventeen cyclists died on city streets in 2022, a figure city officials have touted as a four-year low.
