Two students at a Queens high school were stabbed at their campus on Thursday afternoon, briefly forcing classes to go into lockdown.
Law enforcement sources said the violence erupted at about 1:30 p.m. on Feb. 1 inside Martin Van Buren High School, located at 230-17 Hillside Ave. in Bellerose.
According to authorities, the two students, both 17-year-old boys, were attacked by an unidentified suspect inside a stairwell.
Officers from the 105th Precinct, in responding to reports of the assault, found one student with a stab wound to the stomach, and another knifed in the shoulder, police said.
EMS rushed both victims to a local hospital in stable condition, police sources said. Sources with the Department of Education described the wounds as “superficial.”
Meanwhile, police took the alleged assailant into custody. That individual’s identity has not yet been released, and charges are pending the results of the ongoing investigation. A gun and knife were reportedly recovered.
Van Buren students and classes were briefly placed on lockdown shortly after the stabbing occurred, authorities said. The lockdown, however, was brief, and students were seen being safely dismissed from the campus at about 2:30 p.m.
“The safety and wellbeing of our students is our absolute top priority,” said Department of Education spokesperson Jenna Lyle in a statement to amNewYork Metro. “NYPD immediately responded to an incident at the school. Students were placed on a brief soft lockdown and have now been dismissed. We will be providing additional emotional supports to any student who needs it.”
