A man is dead after attempting to stop a carjacking in Queens on Wednesday night, according to police.
An NYPD spokesperson said that, according to the investigation, Mauro Chimbay spotted an unknown person rifling through his parked car near 25-17 85th St. in Jackson Heights at around 3 p.m. and attempted to stop the apparent robbery-in-progress.
Once confronted, the suspect hopped into a different white sedan and attempted to drive off — but 43-year-old Chimbay gave chase, and hopped on top of the hood of the suspect’s getaway car.
The suspect then slammed on the gas pedal of his car, causing Chimbay to be thrown to the pavement, cops said.
Paramedics arrived on the scene shortly after the incident and found Chimbay lying on the roadway with severe head trauma, and rushed him to Elmhurst Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
The suspect, meanwhile, had fled the scene before police arrived. No arrests have yet been made, and the investigation remains ongoing.
