Another suspect has been charged in connection with the viral Midtown assault on two police officers near a migrant shelter back in January, police announced.
Edgarlis Vegas, 20, who has been residing at a hotel on Atlantic Avenue in East New York, Brooklyn, was charged Monday with assault on a police officer. She is due for arraignment in Manhattan criminal court Tuesday morning.
Law enforcement sources allege that Vegas was part of the group that beat up two officers outside the Candler Building, where a migrant shelter is housed, along West 42nd Street at about 8:30 p.m. on Jan. 27.
Seven other individuals have been charged and/or indicted for their roles in the beatdown, which was caught on NYPD bodycams and quickly went viral went the footage was released. Two other suspects remain at large, according to the NYPD.
Law enforcement sources said the officers initially responded to a disorderly group gathered in front of the Candler Building and moved to disperse them. When one individual refused, according to court documents, an officer grabbed hold of Brito and pushed him against a building, leading to other men at the scene to intervene.
The attack outraged the city, and the anger grew further when five individuals initially arrested for the assault were set free without bail. They were subsequently re-arrested upon indictment, and ordered held on bail.
During the ensuing investigation, charges were dropped against one man, Jhoan Boada, who had been misidentified as alleged participant Marcellino Estee, who was arrested on March 1.
Meanwhile, the NYPD says two other suspects connected to the attack are still wanted. The department re-released their images on Monday night.
One perpetrator is shown wearing a black bubble jacket with a red Puerto Rico baseball cap, ripped blue jeans and gray-and-white sneakers.
The other man wore a white baseball cap with sunglasses, a red hooded sweatshirt, black pants and black-and-red shoes.
