A city Parks Department employee fatally ran over a man sleeping on the beach in Coney Island early Monday morning, according to the authorities.
The Parks worker was driving a Ford pickup truck and exiting the beach when the driver hit the person lying in the sand, near Stillwell Avenue and the Riegelmann Boardwalk at 2:48 a.m. on July 18, police said.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police are investigating the incident but do not suspect any criminality and did not charge the city employee with a crime, according to an NYPD spokesperson.
A Parks spokesperson said the staffer was doing beach cleanup work at the time, and that the agency is conducting an internal probe of the fatal case.
“This is a horrific tragedy. We are investigating the incident internally,” said Meghan Lalor in a statement.
Police are withholding the deceased’s identity until they can notify his family.
