A subway rider fell to his death from a train at the Times Square station on Thursday morning, police reported.

Cops said the tragedy unfolded on board a southbound 2 train as it entered the Times Square-42nd Street stop at about 11:09 a.m. on March 27.

According to police sources, the victim, a 56-year-old man, was riding between the second and third cars of the moving train when he suddenly fell. The cause of his fall is not yet known.

Officers from the Midtown South Precinct and NYPD Transit Bureau responded to the incident along with EMS units, who pronounced the man dead. Police have not yet released his identity, pending family notification.

Published reports indicated that train service on the 2 line was briefly halted while the investigation proceeded. All of the passengers on board the 2 train were safely removed through the first car at the Times Square stop.
