James, Hoylman to Host Conversation on New York’s Progressive Future
New York Attorney General Letitia James (D) and State Senator Brad Hoylman (D-Chelsea, Midtown) will be hosting a discussion on New York’s progressive future this Monday.
The lawmakers will discuss the progressive battles they’ve fought and won recently, and the work that remains to be done. Riverside Park Conservancy Chair Micah Lasher will be moderating the dicussion.
The event will take place on Monday, Dec. 16 at 6:30 p.m. at the CUNY Graduate Center, 365 Fifth Ave.
Johnson Shares His Thoughts on Impeachment
Council Speaker Corey Johnson (D-Chelsea, Hell’s Kitchen) delivered a statement yesterday regarding the articles of impeachment filed against President Donald Trump (R).
Earlier this week, the House Judiciary Committee announced that they would bring two articles of impeachment against Trump: one for abuse of power, and one for obstruction of justice. Johnson agreed wholeheartedly with their decision.
“The President is a sociopathic, pathologically lying criminal who has broken the law many, many times before he was elected,” said Johnson. “The Congress, I believe, should impeach him. I was happy to see these two articles of impeachment that were introduced. The framers of the Constitution wanted us to be able to protect our democracy. We need to get rid of Donald Trump. He is destroying the United States of America, and I am ashamed that he is from our city.”
Powers, Hoylman, Epstein to Host Waterside Plaza Town Hall
Council Member Keith Powers (D-Upper East Side, Carnegie Hill), State Senator Brad Hoylman (D-Chelsea, Midtown) and Assemblymember Harvey Epstein (D-Lower East Side, East Village) will be hosting a town hall meeting on Waterside Plaza next Wednesday.
Powers and his peers will be updating the community on the latest developments in the neighborhood and taking questions about the issues that matter most to them.
The event will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 18 from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Lewis David Pavilion, 25 Waterside Plaza.
Levine Pays Respects to Tessa Majors
Council Member Mark Levine (D-Manhattan Valley, Manhattanville) released a statement yesterday on the homicide of Barnard student Tessa Majors.
Majors, 18, was walking through Morningside Park on Wednesday evening, when several assailants cornered her and fatally stabbed her. Thus far, no arrests have been made.
“As the father of two teenagers, my heart breaks for Tessa Majors, her family and loved ones,” said Levine. “This despicable crime has been a painful shock to the entire community. It is critical that we have a better safety plan for this beloved and heavily used public park, including additional cameras and lighting in high-risk areas.”
However, Levine also pointed out that, on the whole, the park is the safest it’s been in decades. He went out of his way to rebut former NYPD Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik, who blamed the attack on “socialist leftist corrupt politicians” in a tweet.
“I totally reject statements by former Commissioner Bernard Kerik and others, exploiting this tragedy by describing the neighborhood and city in dystopian terms,” said Levine. “We can and will keep our community safe without resorting to the divisive rhetoric of disgraced former leaders.”
