Johnson to Host “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” Fair
City Council Speaker Corey Johnson (D-Chelsea, Hell’s Kitchen) will be hosting a recycling fair this Sunday.
Johnson will be accompanied by several other electeds, including Representative Jerry Nadler (D-Morningside Heights, Inwood) and Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer (D). The fair will have representatives from City agencies provide free information on how to reduce your carbon footprint.
The event will take place on Sunday, Oct. 6 from 1-4 p.m. at the Mathews-Palmer Playground, 445 West 45th St.
Gottfried’s New York Health Act to Be the Subject of Legislative Hearing
The New York Health Act will be the subject of an upcoming legislative hearing from the New York Senate and Assembly Health Committee.
The act, which Assembly Member Richard Gottfried (D-Chelsea, Midtown) sponsored, would establish universal single-payer health coverage for all New Yorkers. New Yorkers would no longer have to pay premiums, deductibles or co-pays.
The hearing will take place on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 10 a.m. at the University of Rochester, 500 University Ave.
Velázquez Introduces Public Housing Emergency Response Act
Representative Nydia Velázquez (D-LES, Brooklyn Queens) has introduced legislation that would allocate $70 billion in capital towards public housing repairs.
Under the proposal, $32 billion would go towards repairs to the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA). Velázquez wrote the bill in response to a report from NYCHA’s newly appointed monitor, which revealed that deteriorating infrastructure has resulted in unsuitable living conditions for NYCHA residents.
“NYCHA used to serve as a national model for affordable housing,” said Velázquez. “Now, it has devolved into a man-made health crisis for working families and our most vulnerable neighbors. Seniors are living without heat, children in public housing suffer from asthma, and families are exposed to toxic lead. We must act boldly to reinvest in the marginalized communities public housing was created to serve.”
Espaillat, Levine Introduce AMTRAK Act
Representative Adriano Espaillat (D-Washington Heights, Sugar Hill) and New York City Council Member Mark Levine (D-Manhattan Valley, Manhattanville) will host a press conference on Monday to discuss their Allowing More Transparency in Reviewing Advertising Construction Act, or AMTRAK Act.
The bill would require Amtrak to follow local rules and processes when installing advertising infrastructure. It was written in response to the public backlash over an Amtrak billboard erected earlier this year on Riverside Drive, obstructing the scenic view along the Hudson.
The conference will take place on Monday, Oct. 7 from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. at West 155th Street and Riverside Drive.
