Levine, Treyger Call for Accounting of 9/11 Survivors
Council Members Mark Levine (D-Manhattan Valley, Manhattanville) and Mark Treyger (D-Bensonhurst, Coney Island) released a joint statement yesterday calling for the full accounting of 9/11 survivors.
The statement referred to the survivors who are still feeling ill effects from the contaminated air near Ground Zero. To address the issue, they have introduced a bill that would require the Department of Education to account for all students and faculty who suffered exposure.
“One group of survivors has consistently gotten too little attention: the students, teachers and staff who who were at schools near Ground Zero during the months following the attack, when the air remained contaminated,” reads the statement. “We must do everything in our power to support the education community – and all those harmed – in the worst attack in our nation’s history.”
Espaillat Forms Friends of Dominican Republic Caucus
Yesterday, Representative Adriano Espaillat (D-Washington Heights, Sugar Hill) announced the formation of the Friends of the Dominican Republic Caucus.
The caucus kicked off in Washington D.C., with a reception on Capitol Hill. Espaillat made the announcement alongside several of his House colleagues and caucus members, and special guests, including the Honorable Jose Tomas Perez, Ambassador of the Dominican Republic to the United States.
“With our growing population and representation across the United States, it remains vital that Dominican-Americans and individuals of Dominican descent have an opportunity to let their voices be heard on the issues and concerns facing their communities around the nation,” said Espaillat. “As a proud member of the Dominican American community and the first Dominican American elected to Congress, starting the Friends of the Dominican Republic Caucus was an honor and I’m appreciative to all who attended yesterday evening launch in Washington.”
Kavanagh Visits FDNY 343 Memorial
State Senator Brian Kavanagh (D-Lower East Side) paid a visit to the Fire Museum’s FDNY 343 Memorial yesterday.
There, the State Senator lay a wreath for the firefighters who had to sacrifice their lives on 9/11. Several other Manhattan electeds, including Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer (D), accompanied Kavanagh that afternoon.
“We’ll never forget the sacrifice that they made on that day, and the bravery and service the men and women of FDNY exhibit every day,” Kavanagh said in a tweet.
