One of the House managers in President Donald Trump’s ongoing impeachment trial, New York Congressman Jerry Nadler, said on Sunday he’ll miss Monday’s proceedings to help his wife in her ongoing cancer battle.

Nadler, who chairs the House Judiciary Committee, issued a statement indicating that he will be meeting with his wife’s doctors Monday to follow up on her ongoing battle with pancreatic cancer. She was hospitalized and diagnosed only days after the congressman led committee proceedings that ended with the passage of two articles of impeachment against Trump.

“She has undergone surgery and is taking further steps to address the spread of the cancer,” Nadler stated. “On Monday, I will be in New York to meet with doctors, determine a path forward, and begin her treatment. I am sorry to miss some of the Senate impeachment trial, which is of critical importance to our democracy.”

The Senate trial is scheduled to resume Monday afternoon, with Trump’s lawyers continuing their defense of the president against charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. Six other House managers will be present to witness the proceedings.

Nadler said he plans to return to Washington late on Monday. He thanked his colleagues and staff for their support at this difficult personal time.
