Carlos Correa passes Twins physical just 1 day after contract agreement

Carlos Correa didn’t have to wait nearly as long for his agreement with the Minnesota Twins to clear the final hurdle.

As first reported by Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the 28-year-old All-Star already passed his physical with the AL Central team with an announcement making the deal official expected to come Wednesday.

After nearly three weeks of attempting to renegotiate a 12-year, $315 million agreement with the New York Mets after medical reports revealed concerns stemming from a surgically-repaired fractured right fibula in 2014 — the same issue that prompted the San Francisco Giants to back out of a 13-year, $350 million agreement — the Twins emerged late in the game to win his signature.

Correa and his agent Boras opted to go with Minnesota’s six-year guaranteed, $200 million deal on Tuesday with a four-year vesting option that would increase his payday to $270 million.

The Mets also offered six guaranteed seasons but at $157.5 million with options to max out the deal at the originally agreed upon 12 years, $315 million.

Minnesota’s quick passing of Correa’s physical likely stems from their familiarity with the shortstop. After seven seasons with the Houston Astros, he signed a three-year, $105.3 million deal with the Twins that included an opt-out at the end of the 2022 season — which he decided to exercise.

Correa batted .291 with an .834 OPS with 22 home runs and 64 RBI in 136 games last season with the Twins, who finished third in the AL Central at 78-84.
