New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones told reporters after practice on Thursday that he had undergone a non-football-related procedure on his neck during the offseason.
Jones said that he underwent the procedure this past winter, but said that it was unrelated to the neck issue that he had last season that kept him out of the final six games of the year. Jones suffered a neck injury during Week 12 last season and he did not return to the field for the rest of the campaign.
“It was completely unrelated. I feel good, necks great,” Jone said about the offseason procedure.
Jones is headed into his fourth NFL season and by far the most important one of his career after the Giants opted not to pick up the fifth year on his rookie contract. The young QB has dealt with a number of issues including injuries and inconsistencies on the field.
And he has already dealt with ups and downs during the first three weeks of training camp. Jones has not looked bad, but he has lacked the consistency needed and hasn’t separated himself from backup Tyrod Taylor.
“I think like anyone I’ve had good days and bad days,” Jones said reflecting on camp so far. “A lot to continue to work on throughout it, but I feel like I’ve made progress and learned a lot in this system and will continue to do so. Continue to improve and that’s always the goal.”
Jones didn’t notice any issues with his neck after the Giants’ preseason opener last Thursday in New England. He went 6-of-10 passing for 69-yards in the win for New York.

Through the first few weeks of camp, new head coach Brian Daboll has constantly talked about the process. Jones had tried to keep that process in mind when he’s had some of her tougher days on the practice field.
“I think that’s part of playing any position, especially Quarterback,” he said. “You’re dealing with it when it’s not always easy, and you’re having to come back and play well, learn from the situation, and like I said, make a change and continue to improve. That’s a big part of the position, that’s a big part of playing football. I think it’s about learning and not repeating mistakes.”
