Jets coach Robert Saleh had high praise for the team’s backup quarterback, Joe Flacco.
“He could start in this league, I believe that,” said Saleh. “Joe Flacco is a starting quarterback in this league.”
Flacco joined the Jets in 2020 as a backup signal caller, following 11 seasons as the starter with the Baltimore Ravens, and 1 year as aboard the Denver Broncos, and currently backs up sophomore quarterback Zach Wilson in New York.
The veteran passer said he embraced the role as a mentor to Wilson, and is “excited” to mentor him through his development.
“That’s my role, and I embrace it,” Flacco told The New York Post. “It keeps you engaged, keeps you a part of the team. I’m not just willing to do it, but excited to do it.”
The 37-year-old is no stranger to the NFL, as he served as the quarterback during the Ravens’ win in Super Bowl XLVII.
He drew criticism for his play in Baltimore, as he failed to consistently propel the team to postseason play — but he remains confident in his ability to start in the NFL, and thanked Saleh for his words of praise.
“I still think I have that ability to start,’’ Flacco said. “It’s good to hear people say that — especially people that are close to the situation.”

“I do believe I am still good enough to be a starting quarterback. That’s what still drives me to work hard and be the best I can.”
Flacco boasts a career 61.7 completion percentage, and has tossed 227 touchdowns to 144 interceptions.
Wilson will start under center for Gang Green in his sophomore season, but he missed 4 games in his rookie year.
Flacco would be the starter if anything happens to Wilson next season, and he is looking forward to taking any opportunity he gets.
“I really haven’t thought about not doing it,” said Flacco. “I haven’t really thought about not playing. And, I believe I can still play.”
