The New York Mets are set to name Eric Hinske as their assistant hitting coach, as first reported by Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.
The move comes as the Mets continue to tweak their coaching staff under Buck Showalter this winter. Former hitting coach Eric Chavez has been promoted to bench coach while Jeremy Barnes was promoted from assistant hitting coach to Chavez’s previous position.
Hinske previously worked with Mets general manager Billy Eppler with the Los Angeles Angels when he served as the AL West club’s hitting coach in 2017. He most recently served as an assistant hitting coach with the Arizona Diamondbacks from 2019-2021.
The 45-year-old was a 12-year MLB veteran, winning the 2002 AL Rookie of the Year award with the Toronto Blue Jays and winning two World Series rings with the Boston Red Sox in 2007 and New York Yankees in 2009. He slashed .249/.332/.430 (.762 OPS) with 137 home runs.
He won a third World Series ring in 2016 with the Chicago Cubs as an assistant hitting coach.
