2022 Laver Cup: Roger Federer’s final match, schedule, how to stream, more

Often an overlooked event in the sports world, the 2022 Laver Cup is now taking center stage after the news that legend Roger Federer would be retiring from the sport after the event. His final match will be a doubles match with Rafael Nadal against Americans Jack Sock and US Open star Frances Tiafoe.

The Laver Cup is an ATP event that pits Team Europe versus Team World in a competition that was meant to be viewed similarly to the Ryder Cup in golf.

The event has only been going for four years, and Team Europe have dominated so far, going a perfect 4-0. They won the inaugural event in Prague, Czech Republic, 15–9, and the following year they earned a 13–8 win in Chicago. In 2019 they won a closer matchup, 13–11 in Geneva, before taking a year off due to COVID and then destroying Team World 14-1 in Boston last year.

Obviously, Team Europe will be hoping to keep that going and send Federer out on a high note.

How does the Laver Cup work?

The two squads are made up of six players with three players qualifying via their ATP Rankings and three selected specifically by the captains.

It will be twelve matches that take place over three days with each day’s play consisting of three singles matches and one doubles. All matches are played as best-of-three sets, with a 10-point tie-breaker to decide the winner if it goes to a third set

The points are awarded as follows:

  • Day 1 – one point per win
  • Day 2 – two points per win
  • Day 3 – three points per win

The first team to 13 points will be crowned champions.

The two captains decide which players to select for specific matches and they usually allow each player to have a chance to play singles and doubles.

What are the teams?

Team Europe: Andy Murray (GBR), Novak Djokovic (SRB), Roger Federer (SUI), Rafael Nadal (ESP), Stefanos Tsitsipas (GRE), Casper Ruud (NOR), Matteo Berrettini (ITA) (alternate)
