The 2024 Subway Series shifts to the Bronx as the Yankees host the Mets for the second and final two-game series between the two New York rivals this season.
The Mets swept the first two games at Citi Field in Queens last month and the two teams’ fortunes have not changed much since then.
Following a disastrous start to the season, the Mets have rebounded well to get back into the National League Wild Card picture. They went 25-11 to end the first half as one of the hottest teams in baseball.
The Yankees, meanwhile, have not been able to get out of their own way. Since starting the season 50-22 — becoming the first team in Major League Baseball to reach 50 wins on June 14 — the Bronx Bombers went 9-20 in their next 29 games entering Monday’s series finale against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Only the putrid Chicago White Sox, who are trying not to set an MLB record for the worst season ever, have had as bad a record as the Yankees during that stretch.
Much of it has to do with an offense that has provided zero support for Aaron Judge and Juan Soto. While the fearsome duo slashed .303/.446/.596 with 16 home runs during that 29-game stretch, the rest of the Yankees slashed a paltry .205/.284/.329 with 18 home runs, per MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch.
The pitching has been even worse, especially with the starting rotation, as its 6.24 ERA was the worst in the majors.
Will they find a way to rebound against the team from across town? Or will the Mets keep their hot summer going?
