Davante Adams was likely here for a short time — and not a very good one, either.
After multiple reports surfaced on Sunday that the New York Jets are preparing to split ways with veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers, his long-time top target in Adams is expected to follow him out of town.
Despite being signed for the next two seasons, the 32-year-old receiver has the ability to push his way out of town thanks to a restructured deal that he worked out with the Jets. He is due $35.6 million in 2025 and 2026 ($38.3 million cap hit) — an astronomical price tag for the Jets to be paying in the middle of another rebuild with new general manager Darren Mougey and head coach Aaron Glenn taking over.
If the Jets want to keep him, they will approach him about restructuring his contract. If Adams wants out, he can decline, and the new brain trust will more likely than not release him.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that Adams is already thinking about his next destination, which includes intrigue in West Coast teams like the Los Angeles Rams and Chargers and potentially the San Francisco 49ers.
A move to Los Angeles would pair him with two of the better quarterbacks in the league, Matthew Stafford and Justin Herbert, though it would eliminate any thought of him following Rodgers to a potential next destination.
Adams and Rodgers spent eight seasons with the Green Bay Packers from 2014 to 2021 before the receiver went west to the Las Vegas Raiders. They were one of the top quarterback-wide receiver duos in the league, with Adams eclipsing the 1,300-yard mark three times in his final four seasons in Green Bay.
When his relationship with the Raiders disintegrated during the 2024 season, Adams forced his way to the Jets to reunite with Rodgers in mid-October. However, former general manager Joe Douglas’s hopes of getting the band back together did little to save Gang Green’s season.
Adams caught 67 passes for 854 yards and seven touchdowns in 11 games with the Jets, but it was merely a consolation prize as a 5-12 season featured the mid-season firings of Douglas and head coach Robert Saleh.
