Once believed to be a talent to put the New York Jets’ defense over the top, Haason Reddick’s time at MetLife Stadium is officially over after 10 games.
The veteran edge rusher has agreed to a one-year, $14 million deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, per multiple reports on Monday, the first day of the NFL’s free-agency period.
Reddick, 30, spent just one season with the Jets after being acquired from the Philadephia Eagles last spring. While he pined for a long-term contract that ultimately did not come from former Gang Green brass headed by ex-GM Joe Douglas, Reddick sat out the entire offseason, preseason, and the first seven games of the 2024 campaign.
With it, he forfeited $5.5 million of his $14.5 million base salary.
When he eventually returned to the field, he looked nothing like the feared pass rusher who posted 50.5 sacks over his previous four seasons. With New York, he posted just one sack and 14 tackles.
His failures were just one of many for a Jets team that is attempting to move its way out of the shadow of dysfunction that reached a fever pitch last year.
Douglas and head coach Robert Saleh were fired mid-season, Aaron Rodgers failed to live up to the hype, and the acquisition of his best pal in Davante Adams did little to save a 5-12 season.
New general manager Darren Mougey and head coach Aaron Genn have already shown Rodgers and Adams the door — the latter agreeing to join the Los Angeles Rams.
