After 11 weeks of NFL football, ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) has decided it is not too early to look at the projected first-round order of the 2025 NFL Draft this April in Green Bay, WI. The New York Giants, with an abysmal 2-8 record after a 20-17 loss in Munich to the Carolina Panthers, are predicted to have the No. 1 of the draft, according to the FPI.
Throughout the season, after every game week, the FPI runs over 10,000 simulations of the remaining games to attempt to predict next year’s draft order. It considers the team’s current record, who they have left to play, where the games will be played, and how many points above or below average a team is.
Big Blue is rock bottom of the NFC East and decided to drop Daniel Jones to third-choice QB in favor of Tommy DeVito at QB1, with Drew Lock acting as backup, head coach Brian Daboll confirmed on Monday. DeVito stepped in behind the OL after Jones’ ACL tear in a Week 9 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders last year, holding a 3-3 record, including a 27-10 win over the Philadelphia Eagles to close the curtains on a 6-11 2023 campaign. He became a cult hero, earning the nickname “Tommy Cutlets” after impressive performances.
This year, it’s been more of the same story for the blue side of New York, starting the season with an opening day 28-6 loss to Sam Darnold’s Minnesota Vikings and a 21-18 loss to Washington Commanders where Jones threw for two touchdowns and 178 yards.
An inconsistent three weeks followed. The Giants held the Cleveland Browns to two touchdowns in a 21-15 win but couldn’t continue the momentum, losing 20-15 to the Dallas Cowboys, where Jones threw an interception on his own 41-yard line in the last 15 seconds.
A promising 29-20 win against the Seattle Seahawks raised hopes again, but the five-loss trot has all but dashed this year’s playoff chances for New York. It’s looking like the Giants will now focus on the future.
DeVito is auditioning for a job next season, while Giants fans might be hoping he can help clinch the No. 1 overall pick for the draft, with the FPI predicting a 19.2% chance. The index is 70% sure the Giants will have a top-5 pick and predicts a 95.7% chance of a top-10 pick.
Tommy Cutlets and the Giants will face a 4-6 Tampa Bay Buccaneers in his first outing of 2024 on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
