Cutlets, anyone?
The New York Giants are benching quarterback Daniel Jones and plan to start Tommy DeVito under center for their Week 12 clash against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Monday.
General manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll’s decision to bench Jones had been a foregone conclusion following the team’s embarrassing Week 10 overtime loss in Munich to the lowly Carolina Panthers in which the veteran passer threw two costly interceptions.
Since signing a four-year, $160 million contract before the 2023 campaign, which includes a team option following this season, Jones has gone 3-13 as the Giants’ starter while throwing just 10 touchdowns compared to 13 interceptions.
The Giants were 2-8 in 10 games with Jones under center this season.
DeVito now gets a second crack at the starting gig in New York. The 26-year-old New Jersey native went 3-3 in six starts last year (nine games in total), throwing for 1,101 yards, eight touchdowns, and three interceptions while becoming an overnight sensation in the Big Apple.
Initially surviving the offseason that projected his tenure with the Giants ending, DeVito entered the 2024 season as the team’s third-string quarterback behind Jones and Drew Lock — a career backup who has completed three of eight passes this season for six yards in two appearances this year.
The decision to bench Jones all but ends his career with the Giants after six inconsistent, injury-riddled seasons. Schoen is expected to exercise the team’s opt-out on his contract and is expected to heavily pursue a quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft this coming spring.
While the Giants were on their bye week, losses by the Tenessee Titans, Las Vegas Raiders, and Cleveland Browns dropped them from the No. 2 overall pick to No. 5.
