Brian Daboll is sticking with Daniel Jones, at least for one more week.
The New York Giants head coach confirmed on Monday, less than 24 hours after his team was blown out 28-6 by the Minnesota Vikings in their season opener, that he is not making any changes at the quarterback position yet.
Jones trudged through a horrendous start to the 2024 season after recovering from a torn ACL. He completed 22 of 42 passes for 186 yards and two interceptions against the Vikings, and he perpetually looked out of place under center.
Entering Monday night’s Week 1 finale between the New York Jets and San Francisco 49ers, the Giants were the only team in the NFL to not score a touchdown in the season’s opening week.
Sunday’s dud against Minnesota only continued what has been an alarmingly concerning two seasons for Jones. While battling multiple injuries, he has thrown just two touchdowns compared to eight interceptions in his last seven games played.
Should this sort of play continue, the Giants will have no choice but to bench the 27-year-old and ultimately move on from him entirely. The team holds an opt-out in his contract following this season — the second year of a four-year, $160 million deal.
Historically speaking, Jones has performed well against Washington, winning five of his seven starts against New York’s NFC East rival with 10 touchdowns compared to three interceptions.
Drew Lock and Tommy DeVito are the backups to Jones. Daboll also denied on Monday having the thought of bringing in another quarterback to create more competition should a change at the position be made.
