Giants fire offensive line coach Bobby Johnson after disastrous 2023

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll revealed on Monday morning, roughly 12 hours after their disappointing 2023 season ended, that the team has fired offensive line coach Bobby Johnson after two seasons.

The Giants’ patchwork offensive line was one of the worst units in NFL history, allowing 85 sacks in 2023. Only the 1986 Philadelphia Eagles allowed more sacks (104) in a single season.

An inability to protect the quarterback led to key injuries that impacted New York’s disappointing 6-11 season for the worse. After suffering a neck injury in Week 5 that held him out for three games, Daniel Jones suffered a season-ending torn ACL in Week 9 against the Las Vegas Raiders. Backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor also broke four ribs earlier this season.

Ineptitude along the offensive line has been a lingering issue for the organization since former general manager Dave Gettleman’s failed priority to build up the protection unit during his disastrous stint in charge.

Big Blue has invested significant draft capital on offensive linemen in recent years. While Andrew Thomas appears to be an exception, the organization has failed to develop legitimate options — headlined by the struggles of Evan Neal, the No. 7 overall pick from the 2022 NFL Draft.

General manager Joe Schoen and Daboll also dismissed special teams coordinator Tomas McGaughey.
