The New York Giants are adding a veteran presence to their wide receiver room, signing Allen Robinson on Thursday.
Turning 31 in August, Robinson has struggled to find a regular role in recent seasons after being one of the league’s more formidable pass catchers. After recording 1,250 yards and six touchdowns on 102 receptions in 2020 with the Chicago Bears, he has posted just 1,029 yards over the last three seasons with the Bears, Los Angeles Rams, and Pittsburgh Steelers.
He appeared in all 17 games for Pittsburgh last season, posting 34 catches on 49 targets for 280 yards.
Robinson amassed three 1,000-yard seasons in his first seven years in the NFL, including a 2015 campaign in just his second year in the league with the Jacksonville Jaguars in which he led all receivers with 14 touchdowns. He put up two straight 1,000-yard seasons with a combined 13 touchdowns in 2019-2020 with the Bears.
An inability to work out a long-term deal ultimately spelled an end to his time in Chicago. Playing under the franchise tag in 2021, he recorded 38 catches for 410 yards before hitting the free-agent market.
In 127 career games, he has 562 career receptions for 7,028 yards and 43 touchdowns.
He joins a Giants team with a fairly inexperienced group of wide receivers that got even younger after the 2024 NFL Draft. New York selected LSU star Malik Nabers with the No. 6 overall pick, adding to a young core that already features the promising talents of the 23-year-old Wan’Dale Robinson and the 22-year-old Jalin Hyatt.
Robinson also provides another proven option for quarterback Daniel Jones, who enters a pivotal season behind a rebuilt offensive line and a beefed-up group of receivers. Even with the uncertainty of tight end Darren Waller’s future as he mulls over retirement, 2024 will provide the QB with the most options to potentially build more reliable relationships other than with Darius Slayton — New York’s No. 1 receiver in recent years who should adopt more of a secondary role alongside Robinson with more young talent coming in.
