The NFL trade deadline is today. Traditionally, it’s a day that comes and goes like any other day. However, a centerpiece running back (Trent Richardson) and a former All-Pro linebacker (Jon Beason) already have been dealt during this season. Considering the trade winds have been blowing around Giants wide receiver Hakeem Nicks for weeks, he could be the next big-name player on the move — although indications are he will stay in New York. If he is moved, here’s a look at three teams who would benefit the most from acquiring the soon-to-be free agent.
Lions (5-3)
Anyone who saw Sunday’s win against the Cowboys knows two things: How much Detroit relies on the passing game, and how much quarterback Matthew Stafford relies on Calvin Johnson. The wide receiver accounted for two-thirds of Stafford’s yardage. Nicks would be a solid complement as the Lions chase a second postseason berth in three seasons.
Colts (5-2)
Losing Reggie Wayne for the season was a huge blow to the offense. He’s both a veteran presence and the only true No. 1 receiver on the team. Indianapolis might not be willing to part with even more draft picks after trading for Richardson, but adding Nicks to the mix would allow T.Y. Hilton to remain in the slot and limit the reliance on Darrius Heyward-Bey.
Patriots (6-2)
New England has done pretty well considering the lack of healthy options for Tom Brady to target — not to mention Brady’s own struggles. That said, Bill Belichick has been known to pull the trigger on midseason deals in the past, and Nicks is a clear upgrade over Aaron Dobson, Kenbrell Thompkins and Julian Edelman. And he makes it to the field more often than Danny Amendola.
