Jets Film Breakdown: how much of an upgrade is Derek Carr to 2022 quarterback room?

Much has been made about the potential of a partnership between the New York Jets and Derek Carr. Carr, the Raiders’ all-time leading passer in every single statistical category was cut by the team that drafted him and now can choose his future.

For the Jets, the chance at upgrading the quarterback position is of the utmost importance in the 2023 off-season. A year removed from having the combination of three quarterbacks with a total of just 15 touchdown passes, New York has an opportunity to upgrade their most important position.

Derek Carr hasn’t had a season in which he’s thrown less than the number of touchdown passes that the Jets have dealt with in the last couple of years. The 31-year-old has thrown for over 35,000 yards and 217 touchdowns.

While his worst season as a pro came last year with the Raiders, the decisiveness that the quarterback has played with has been a big reason why he’s been to four pro bowls. A 24:14 touchdown to interception ratio is also something that the Jets and their fans would kill for.

Carr is an upgrade that New York would ill-afford to let walk away. In this week’s film room, we take a look at two plays that show the biggest reason why that’s the case.

It’s clear that Derek Carr is a massive upgrade for the New York Jets. With other teams though still clearly in the picture for the former Fresno State product, Gang Green will also need to decide if they should go all in on a massive contract that would instantly upgrade the team, or look at other veteran quarterbacks that would cost more draft capital.

In short, the Jets need a quarterback who can be decisive down the field and feed the ball to the bevy of playmakers they already have on the roster.

Derek Carr could very well be that quarterback.
