New York Red Bulls star defender John Tolkin has been named to the United States squad for the 2024 Summer Olympics, beginning July 26 in Paris.
The 21-year-old New Jersey native becomes the sixth player in franchise history — and the first since the club was rebranded to the Red Bulls from the Metrostars — to be named to an Olympic roster. Tim Howard and Ramiro Corrales were the last to do so in 2000, which was two years before Tolkin was even born.
Tolkin has made seven appearances for the US Olympic team throughout their exhibition camps. He also made one appearance for the United States senior national team in 2024, appearing in a friendly against Slovenia in January.
He has catapulted through the ranks of United States soccer thanks to a dazzling start to his career with New York. He has been a regular in the first team since he was 18, developing into a dynamic left-back.
In 105 MLS appearances with New York, he has recorded six goals and 10 assists while providing a steady presence in the backline that has repeatedly piqued the interest of larger European clubs in recent years.
Team USA announced its men’s soccer Olympic roster on Monday morning in preparation for its first appearance at the tournament since 2008. They will face off against Spain in a friendly prior to the Summer Games on July 18 in Bordeaux, France. After the friendly, Tolkin and the United States will participate in Group A of the Olympic tournament and will start off against the hosts, France, on July 24. Following that match, the Americans will face New Zealand on July 27 and then finish group-stage play against Guinea on July 30.
The US will look to advance out of the group stage at the Olympics for just the second time in five appearances. They finished fourth at the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney, Australia.
Men’s soccer at the Olympic Games requires teams to field rosters of U-23 players (players under the age of 23). Three senior-player roster spots (players over 23) are permitted.
