New York Mets center fielder Jose Siri is facing a stint on the injured list after fouling a ball off of his shin during Saturday’s loss to the Athletics, according to manager Carlos Mendoza

“He’s in pain,” Mendoza said on Sunday prior to his team’s series finale in Sacramento. “He walked in this morning still on crutches. He’s pretty sore, not able to put weight on it…We’ll see where we’re at.”

The injury occurred in the second inning when he tipped an 0-1 offering from JT Ginn off his left shin. He immediately went down in a heap and was helped to the bench before exiting the field on a golf cart.

The team will be able to decide whether to shelve him in the next day or so. When Siri was initially asked if an IL stint was a reality, he said, “I don’t know.”

“The way he’s feeling right now, I could see this as a potential IL unless he turns a corner here pretty soon,” Mendoza added.

Siri signed a one-year, $2.4 million deal to join the Mets this winter after two-plus seasons with the Tampa Bay Rays. Better known for his defense, the 29-year-old was batting just .050 with a .308 OPS in 10 games as a part of a platoon alongside Tyrone Taylor in center field.

For as long as Siri is sidelined, Taylor will be the No. 1 option in center field.
