Lewis Morgan missed the New York Red Bulls’ home opener on Saturday night after picking up an injury during training earlier this week and is considered week-to-week, according to head coach Sandro Schwarz.

“It’s tough to lose a very important player for us,” Schwarz said. “Especially with his deep runs. We had this issue [Friday] pretty much after our training… I hope that Lewis is coming back the next two, three weeks. Maybe next Saturday. We will see.”

The type and severity of the injury is unknown at this time. Mohammed Sofo, a 20-year-old forward who has just one match of MLS experience, slotted in for Morgan in New York’s starting lineup for Saturday night’s tilt against Nashville SC and scored in the seventh minute.

Morgan, 28, was coming off a resurgent campaign last season where he scored 13 goals and won Major League Soccer’s Comeback Player of the Year award. He appeared in just six matches across all competitions in 2023 after suffering a hip injury that ultimately required surgery.

Despite interest from European clubs, Morgan opted to sign a two-year contract extension with options for the 2027 and 2028 seasons to stay with the Red Bulls.

“I’ve been in football long enough to know that you don’t need to jump away from something if it’s good, you know?” Morgan told amNewYork last week. “I mean, we made MLS Cup Final last year and to try and go one better with the same group of guys is a challenge that excited me. I love living here. My girlfriend is from here. All of that stuff matters. I also feel like I’m coming into my prime now. So I wanted to make sure that Red Bull were getting me as I was coming into my prime so I could try and give back to the club that stuck by me through the injury year in 2023. We’ve both been good for each other.”

The Red Bulls are still searching for their first goal of the 2025 campaign after being shut out in last week’s season-opening loss to FC Cincinnati.
